FGS Mapping Challenge 2013 - Alvins Entry - Postby Alvind » 16 Apr 2013, 09:20

I will be entering the mapping challenge for abit of fun. I plan to base my map on th Oxford Malmaison, which is an former prison converted to a hotel from what I understand. Being specific it will be this area:

https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=oxfor ... 4L4BRRM%3A

I won't be staying completely true to the colour scheme and lighting. And some minor changes to the architecture. Ill be ageing the prison abit and mixing it up some. Started it last night and will have some screenshots up tonight.

Bene (Good). Are you making a new skybox or just use the default night one of DX?

Completely different atmosphere to the original. Not 100% sure this is going to be the final colour scheme. But it's a starting point. Just fixtures and deco to go in. Crit welcomed.

So you're planning to model it as the prison? Looks good so far.

TBH, (though I'm not sure you can do this) it would probably be better if you tried to model the hotel rather than the prison, as people have played prison maps before and the hotel looks both post, atmospheric and unusual.

But if you prefer to do the prison that's fine, just remember that you need to have documentary evidence of how it was. Either way, also note that using some custom textures is encouraged.

Can I ask what prison maps there are for DXMP?

Re the hotel: I've looked at the hotel and it does look pretty cool but the standard DX deco and texture weren't up to matching that quality if you get what I mean. I felt as if it would drag the map downso I intended to leave it out and just do the prison as a small map for now. Having spawn points in the cells and the fighting on the 3 levels

Half-Life 2 Deathmatch map: DXMP_Lockdown.

Moreover, you should check out Jailbreak.

There is a prison map from years ago, I'll try and dig it up for you, but I did try to find this map a few years back and couldn't find it, it's out there somewhere though.

Here is Jailbreak_Beta2_3. Still unfinished in many ways!
Check it out, host if you like.
One day soon I will finish all my maps and that's a promise :-D

BTW this map is totally made up and not based on any building that I know of.

Malmaison features often on BBC "Lewis". There was an episode where someone was murdered just outside.

I haven't decided. I would like to do something underground, because that is very Deus Ex, but access is difficult to most places. I might do the bunkers under Dover Castle, or a car park. Possibly Hotel Landerneau, but I would prefer to do something I can actually see on a daily basis if necessary.
