Why Study Abroad?

Post by bryanmaviss »

Before I myself had a chance to travel abroad on a college scholarship program, I looked at those who have had such experience with unconcealed admiration. You really have to be brave enough for opening yourself to the challenges of living and studying abroad, away from home. Homesickness, cultural shock, drastically different customs and traditions, the people, the lifestyle, the weather, and all the difference that comes along with the word “abroad,” can get too frustrating at times. However, regardless of all the fuss, at the end of the day most people who have studied abroad come to confess that it’s been a life-changing and one of the most valuable experiences they have had in their life. Been there, done that.

Firstly, life and study in a different country, within a different culture and society is a great chance for personal, academic and professional development. Nowadays, schools provide diverse college scholarship for study abroad and exchange programs which enable students gain access to international educational resources and new perspectives in their field of study. If you can’t make up your mind about whether to apply to that college scholarship abroad, you might want to find out what else it can give you apart from international classroom experience and useful educational resources.

Self-recognition – Living in a different culture helps you get to know yourself better and reevaluate your own culture and believes. The interaction with other cultures and worldviews broadens your outlook and helps you see your own culture through different eyes. When living abroad, you learn to appreciate things you had previously taken for granted.

Intercultural communication – In our era of globalization and cross-cultural communications, the importance of studying abroad has grown now more than ever. By the time you come back home after a year of studying abroad, you’ll have developed excellent intercultural communication skills. The ability to communicate effectively in international settings will place you on a higher position both in school and career.

Friends and travel – Yes! That’s my favorite part. While traveling may not be an affordable activity when you’re home, during your studies abroad you automatically become a traveler. Plus, you constantly meet new local people and other internationals in college, during social gatherings, travels and other activities.

Anything more exciting you could ask for?
