MAP: Biggest map yet...

Post by ShadowRunner »

I usually make a second mess-around map to take a break from the first one I'm working on. The result this time was fun.

This is the whole of outdoor Paris and most of below ground as well. Everything is there so far, except sounds and movers.
Player will be able to travel single player style or via metro train or via street level between most areas. I'm thinking about a helicopter ride.

I've added a new subway station as well, converted the cathedral station as well to fit.
There will be two trains and three stations. Cathedral, Metro and Catacombs.
Instead of the Chateau I will fill the blank area with parts of DXMP_Cathedral and parts of the Chateau gardens.

To give you some idea of how big the outdoors area is, firing a law from the catacombs tower at the Cathedral is impossible, a LAW travels only about 60% of the map before it runs out of oomph.

A Vandenberg version exists, as does an Area51 as well, all that remains is for me to do HK and NY and to finish converting them from SP to MP.

I see this as an RPG or fun map or sniper training map perhaps.

No offense but some mash-up map are called biggest? I don't think so. I'm pretty sure it's gonna be unstable, too, so rebuilding and/or making it RPG/adding RPG elements is gonna be hard. (shops etc)

I recommend fully custom if you plan to going for RPG, which I don't think you should.. since you're working on too many projects.

I reckon this would be horrible if it was anyone other than Rollo doing it.

no stability issues with fly the planes or area51. the map has homes, besides the cathedral more than anything. Some offices near the catacombs, a restaurant and hotel in metro area and a bakers, i could add the club.

I would host the map and see how players treat it before deciding if making a rpg or just a bigass sniper map. It could be gangland, fighting for areas, the subway very dangerous.

working on 4 dxsg maps and a dxmphr map. messing around in the sdk with other things.

my problem in finishing things, more than anything is the mismatch of ide cables i have with back up HDD's. I'm not sure my DVD back-up has everything. Finding things and not overwriting the wrong thing is half the battle.

Well Rollo, I was saying it several times, but since it just happens to me, there is no reason to remove it.. it's my own problem at the end :o

Big maps are fun :)
I remember trying to find a cloaked American guy in fly_the_planes.
He was on about being an ex commando and being good at hiding, the *love*?

Anyway yeah. Big maps. Cool.

I like big maps, just have to be in the mood to play them, usually after an hour or so of typical zero augging

It's his problem, he is not willing to remove it either, maybe he is at peace with Goliath.

Looks pretty awesome to me! If the stability issues can be solved or avoided, then this will be great to play on!

Zone lighting would be a good way to cut down on map size I'd imagine, I'm experimenting with using one very bright light with a large radius instead of using several dimmer lights.

Since I discovered zone lighting, it is an essential part of my maps now.

One reason I love it so much is you can set the zone light to a different colour than your actual lights.
The way the light MIXES is very beautiful and very like original Deus Ex.

For example. Zone light being 24/24/24 and using lights which are 32/128/4 will give you something really sexy. Also having a twilight effect like zone light being 32/160/4 and actual lights being 32/32/32 again is very sexy.

Not to mention huge savings on amounts of lights and filesize.
