2MB Mapping Challenge - Kalman - Postby [FGS]Kalman » 02 Apr 2012, 20:45

Hi!
So, as I see I'm the first who started to work on a map for a challenge.
There's a game called Dear Esther, I saw many screenshots and videos about it, and the first map starts at a lighthouse. It was on an abandoned island, and I decided to make something like that.
My concept is to make a small cliff with a lighthouse and some smaller houses (power supply or generator etc.)
Some layouts I've found for the lighthouse:

I'll post some concept drawings tomorrow or later

Some truly beautiful buildings there, your idea is something different, I don't think I've ever seen a lighthouse in DXMP before.

Yeah, that's why I want to make it
I've got some issues with my drawings, the paper is too small lol
I did the cliff yesterday, if you jump into the water, you will die, so you don't have to suicide if you can't climb up

Looks a bit cubic from a longer distance, but it's better if you stand on it (and you never could see it from further)

Interesting. Looks good so far. Searchlights are famously bad in DX so it will be interesting to see what Kalman does. I'm also wondering how he's going to do it in 2mb. His approach seems good so far.

I know I can do it below 2MB, maybe I'll get really close (about 2000KB)
I think I'll make the lights something like alarmlight

Alessi, I tried the lighthouse, it's 100% deathly if you fall down :)

Current size is 523KB, and the lighthouse is almost complete

From further

I'll have to add the lantern and some other houses near the lighthouse (oil supply room, generator room and a small house where the keeper lives)

Wow you're advancing well quickly, houses sounds great and will give the map bags of character not to mention hiding places!

Kalman's really challenging himself on Mb limit with four buildings, terrain and skybox. Also playability is a challenge here I think.
