I would say Iceworld is far from a good example, if you want to learn. It has no spawnrooms, the weapons racks are too far apart and there is a general lack of cover or intrigue in the map. It has none of the elements of a usual Deus Ex map. Just make whatever you feel like making, it's peoples' choice whether to frequent it or not. You'll learn the most when you host your maps and see what people like and what people don't. You'll find it is impossible to cater for everyone within one map.
If you're mapping for altfire, bear in mind people use overpowered weps and need to jump, fly and enjoy the low gravity, it can't be done in Iceworld, smuggler and most 0-aug designed maps. Bear in mind also, a grenade can be thrown very far in Altfire, so spawnrooms need to be covered and further apart than if it were a normal 0-aug map. So in fact in general making a very small map is really not a good idea at all for altfire, it just won't work, unless your intention is to have a spawnkilling grenade fest.
Another recommendation is to make sure your spawnrooms have at least TWO exits. Some recent maps do not.
