I was always better on my win98 machine.
That was *loving* ages ago though.

Oh god nostalgia.

So what is the future of DX?

Is there a gametype where these problems do not matter so much? or a maptype etc? I completely understand for fighters like Ken, a lot of the enjoyment is being lost by the actions of a few, what is the solution? Kick people until they fix themselves? Ask people to download something or fix something before they can enter a server? Ban the unrepetent few? I'd rather ban one or two people than have 20 ppl stop playing.

I would recommend kicking, because there is no way every server will kick, anyway. If you have a quality server in which you want to provide quality gaming experience then that is the natural course of action. I would note it in the server info at the very least that players with cpu/video related gliches will be kicked. This of course requires the presence of active administrators. That same info would direct the players to your website on which they can find solution to their problem. From my experience I believe many problematic players dont fully understand what you are talking about or how or why to fix anything if you talk with them in the server, and not only does it disturb other players it also takes a lot of time to concentrate on each individual when they all share same issues.

Perhaps a serverside mod is key. The few actors effected could possibly be coded a little stronger and replaced with a mod that doesn't really appear to do anything on the surface, but in reality changes the workings of culprit weapons.
That is a little more feesible than coding a patch for frame-rate locking.

FPS limiting isn't rare among shooter games at all, I think UT engines should have them too. Perhaps the coders should simply look it up on google and make a similar script optimized for DX?

I dont know how it is done in other games. We discussed with couple guys how it could be achieved. Main problem we ran into is that you can set your hardware settings to override software settings such as dxmp fps cap. If you can somehow figure out how to both enforce the fps cap AND kick those with fps value STILL higher than the enforced cap is set to, then it might work.

I am curious, do you actually have faster groundspeed with fps glich in the server? Objects/actors react to you faster, that much is sure. For client it might look like you are also moving faster, but does it have any difference for the other clients? Make a racing event? :-D

Peace, love and unity. That's the way to go (yes, I am that naive)

Well not really...xD

You got the solution, it's simple and clean! :)

@Hidden: A race would be a neat idea!

Anyway, from my profound knowledge of the Unreal Engine, I can say the following..

Firing faster.. definitely possible.
Having items equipped/used faster.. not necessarily, since that's based on ping. If you have a higher latency, the client needs to wait for the server response nevertheless.. independently of the fps rate
Moving faster... well I'm not sure, this is difficult.. from my fps bug (where everything goes into slomo when I get high FPS), I can really only move very slow
..but yeah.. as you said, a race might show the result! :-D

belt items equip faster and sniper scope toggles faster as fps increases thats been known for long, i suppose you need to have a relatively small ping to begin with.

on my old pc i played a game where everybody were slow but i was fast, i think that was the case anyway.. it was the total opposite to the common laptop issue back then when only you moved slow. however that seemed to have no server side effect, as the slomo guys still somehow managed to kill me well before i could harm them.

recently i had the pleasure of playing dx with roughly 20 000 fps, since for some reason my game suddenly after 2-3 years figured out that my cpu has two cores without me changing anything or updating anything. it made me move REALLY slow but game was normal speed around me. I didnt get very far since it would kick me right back to my old position or near that spot so i managed to move maybe 1 meter per 5+ minutes. someone reported that i was floating in air matrix style.
