Apparently "normal" is relative to the clients FPS, as time went by everyone, except the people who left vsync as it is, started getting quicker and quicker. It seems like there's a line that if crossed things get insane though... But also very noticeable. I don't think it happens untill 300, 400+ fps from what I experienced, but it's very easy to get to that amount of FPS for any modern system (gaming rigs from 2008/2009 can easily achieve it)
I remember people like Clix (yes) lowering graphic details to an INSANE low to get an FPS advantage, lowering graphics not just with ingame options but also editing values in the .ini to a point where textures were basically a smooth wall of a colour vaguely resembling the original texture.
At the time this wasn't being bitched about too much either. From my experience anyway.
Now, all you have to do is turn on vsync and people start having a fit.
Turning vsync on, which you can do in-game, gives you a performance improvement = Cheating
Editing user.ini outside of the game to pull out your medkit and use it and swap back to your assault rifle with 1 button = Acceptable
BUG. Emptying out your assault rifle, swapping to a different weapon and swapping back to a full clip instead of waiting for it to reload = Acceptable
Odd.
Don't get me wrong, ideally I would like everyone to play on equal ground and have the game being based PURELY on skill. But it's just not like that.
Back in the day where no one reached an FPS high enough to give much of an advantage, people were moaning about ping all the time, and lieing about what their pings actually were (couldn't see it in a scoreboard yet)
I don't remember caring much, but that might've been because I was too busy banning Nobody from a server.
In the very end, I couldn't give a crap who is the best player in this game. I like playing competitive but it really doesn't bother me when someone with 500 FPS sprays me to death everytime I walk around a corner. I didn't even care much when Lionheart (dat was [A]lex rite?) was on a server publically haxoring. That stuff is actually kind of fun.
Like I said, when things get insane with FPS it's very easy to notice, and the people can be dealt with accordingly, talked into capping their FPS or get a banhammer for all I care.
But it's not cheating.
Hell, we should see it as part of ATDM in 0 Aug, taking down the juggernauts.
