I believe there are hundreds of Dx'ers staring at an empty server list, if one of those would just join there would be an avalanche of players!!!!
Okay the above was only in my head, but if you want a game it's a good idea to sit in a server for 5 mins if needed and people will join, many times have I gone into the FGS 0-Augs server to check on a map only for people to join very quickly, before you know it you have a half filled server.

Yeh, when I view the list and it's empty I'll join a server, and within a couple of maps there'll be a full server.

Ive noticed that, no matter what the map, as well. It shows how many are actually checking the list, i use the DX-SL v1.21 beta if i want to quickly check, I honestly do not trust the newer versions as far as I can throw them, the newest one tends to crash all the time, anyway I just tend to join a server and wait for it to fill

I think this is more true than people realise! I have
http://www.dxalpha.com/files/list as a startup tab in my browser. Usually just jump straight in if I see a few players.

If DXSL or similar actually showed the number of people using DXSL, then that would be very interesting. But I suspect the figures would be quite low, as most journalists, SP modders, retired vets etc are not likely to have DXSL.
I disagree with the "there are only 30-40 players" statement. It's probably double this figure.
This is based on evidence from Facebook group, Eidos forums, my forums, clan forums etc.
When I announced HR project, 91 people within one hour visited my forums. People have it installed, but don't always play.
The facebook group has around 150 members. Some MP topics on FB get more than 35 people posting in them.
Adding up FGS, Nkz, AIB and other regular tags alone equals more than 35 players.
There are many players who play less than once a week and these aren't considered. SP modders, a lot of people who are playing DX regularly, but only visit DXMP to look at new work or let off steam occasionally. People in the military etc e.g. Smookie.
Also a ton of modders, journalists, eidos staff, bloggers etc who play like 4 times a year.
I would think these figures run into around 300 easily, if not more, with around at least 70 that could be consider active/regular.
Depending on what you call regular, this figure easily reaches triple figures.
One thing is for sure though, you only need to sit on a server 5-10 minutes and people will join.
