New map in the making...

Well I've installed the SDK again and I'm going to start on a new map. Hopefully a map pack will be finished someday.

The idea for the maps is to modernise the stock maps. My first one will be to modernise DXMP_Smuggler. The theme for the map is a mech research facility, the map will have a very similar shape to smuggler to keep the playability the same but things will be changed. For instance, the square pillars around the map shall be replaced with something like containment tubes with a NPC floating in it, the top area of the middle section will be replaced with a large open dome.

I'll be making new textures for the whole map, and probably using a couple of old ones. I want to try and get a team of us working on the whole thing, each of us taking on one of the stock maps and making them more aesthetically pleasing.

All comments and ideas are welcome. The map should be done within a month or so.

the thing about Smuggler is...

1. FPS

2. not much actors/movers

3. No dead ends / easy to get across map quick (central area)

Smuggler is the fast paced combat map. It's so playable because of the lack of complexity.

changing the pillars is not really changing the playability or action of the map.

You intend to change the rooms as well?

The layout will be the same in most places, similar in others. However, the entire look and feel of the map will be different.

The way I see it, the stock maps were made for PC's which are now seen as Age old Antiques. Initially I thought of a simple reskin of the map, but decided to change the map from a car park to a research facility, well part of a research facility. There wont be any stupid rooms filled with desks and that crap.

all those 56k maps like GODZ_Omaha seem a joke compared to maps which are reaching 20mb in size now...

Well, the GODZ maps are a special case.
The GODZ maps made after 2003 are the result of someone not being able to map.

I heard NC's son made one of them.

I liked Hillz, CargoStation, Horizon Beach, Ship,

did not like Close Quarters, Bumtown, Omaha, FieldsofDespair, Sniperbox, BaseCamp. I miss the 20mm and lams... but not the rifle...


I didn't know any were made after 2003...

Yeah, Eleven made some maps too, they got the "11s" tag in the name.

ALL those maps were made 2005 or 2004.

And tbh remakes of old maps have been done and redone so repetitively I believe any future remakes should only be done by the original architects.

please explain... what maps are you referring to...

I would modify your statement to "redone badly so repetitively"

If you look, there are are some cool edits of SP and MP maps...

He means, DXSG MAPS ARE *loving* REMAKES OF THE *loving* ORIGINAL MAPS.

Or he's just on about something else. iunno.

No I think he's bitching the mapping community saying our remakes are metabolic end product lol. He's got a point in most cases, there's one clan that has made about 5 versions of Smuggler, and all of them suck more than the original.

But perhaps he hasn't seen Smuggler_Altfire, or Infiltration beta, or Area51_TheDayAfter, I gotta say modestly that it is "improvement" on original and therefore worthwhile... :D , great maps, wonder who made them...

And when Magus remakes a CS map, it owns...

But I like your idea of using Smuggler to make a lab...
