SG server debate

I have been asked...

1. why is command_post on SG server.

2. why do we have 3 augs on start up and up to 9 augs for streakers.

3. why is there no mapvote

My answer.

3. Mapvote was deliberate. When mapvote was on, ppl voted only Area51Bunker_V3_152 and used lame tactics which contributed to the previous unpopularity of SG and obscurity of other maps, which actually fix the problems of the first prototype map. If you remember [A] stopped hosting SG and only hosted AG. Players bitch a map before they even have played it sometimes, never more so in SG. TheDayAfter map is actually 2 years old, but only recently started getting popular, partly due to the fact that I forced people to play it, not V3_152... It was designed to remove certain issues of the first map, such as vents, ringcamping etc. People often voted against it, simply because it was made by me, and not by [A]Nobody... that is why it is unlikely that I am gonna let noobs run the server...Something I learned is that a map gets bitched for reasons as stupid as the fact that people get lost, or don't know the map ... mapvote will only increase that problem, and until players know all the new maps, I see no good reason at all to introduce mapvote. Mapvote never existed before in SG, so why now? Even FGS members have complained about a map, when asked why, their reply, "I don't know the secret base"... that made me very angry and convinced that mappers should be running the server, not players... who basically are very lazy sometimes.
So with that kind of attitude around, there's little chance I trust you with mapvote. New maps will not be played, because you "don't know" them, definitely some players are idiots here, think they know more about gameplay and mapping than mappers.

1. Command_Post is team-based, objective-based, contains a bunker, it is combat RPG, it is like SG, a friggin cool mod. There is an alarm, and you metabolic end product your pants and have to run fast, just like SG. Not every aspect of the server is serving players, we have mappers and modders too. Any questions? Command_Post is there for many many reasons.

2. This decision about augs was reached after 2 years of running servers and watching auggers argue with 0-auggers... I am tired, like all of you, of watching these two sides argue and therefore decided upon something to shut both sides up. 4 augs will cause a riot with atdm guys, 1 or 2 augs will produce unpopularity as before, many people find it too hard and wont play there. 0-aug on start, sorry but that is a joke, imagine spaz with 3 augs fighting 0-auggers with no augs... the server will not last very long. Even though I am a 0-augger, I see no sense at all in 3 aug maximum. The current settings seem to work, I see atdm v noob. For me that is a very successful result, I don't think any other server brings such a diverse section of the community together. And that is very important. I'd rather the server was busy and a few unhappy sods, than only one section visit.

None of my decisions are ever final and usually are not taken alone, most of SG server was discussed with people before it happened, we do undertake research etc, and draw on our experiences of running factory, dxag, platoon, wunderland etc... and as you can see, I don't tailor either server to help me win, I remove my own maps from them too... I try to be objective, fair and please all at the same time, clearly it is impossible...Orbital was just removed from the SG server, even though I love this map, I can see a reason for it to go...

OK the debate is open...
Can you change map please, I don't know how to fight in this secret base
The whole friggin idea, is that you guys get scared, lost, confused etc...
Until I'm outvoted request denied: fight in unfamiliar territory and be scared, lost, confused, triggerhappy etc...

I am sorry for lack of tact and diplomacy in my reply, but one of the ppl asking these questions is the same person who "don't know how to fight in this secret base"... lol, can you see why I don't want mapvote.

Also, no-one is saying Command_Post or SG maps are perfect, I can't speak for FACE, but for new SG maps, as you can see they are constantly being edited, following playtesting. So another reason for no mapvote is to improve all maps, which wont happen if you guys are only voting maps you feel safe and know well...

I don't think any changes should be made on the SG server. It's current settings and map rotation is by all means steady.

NO .... Learn fight in this map or dont play it

I agree with the [HK] guy: leave it.

And as for the augs: 3 seems to work more for me (in se a zero augger) cause i don't have to make the heartwrecking choice between ballistic or ads in the beginning, i can have both. Ok, 5 would be better as i could have vision and energy shield as well, but i'm happy with 3 as well :-D .
I'll just have to get used to cloakers making me jump of my chair in the beginning, but hey, i don't complain...

Although Command Post doesn't belong on an DXSG server, simply due to the fact that it's not a DXSG map, I believe it's a nice addition to the maplist, it's almost like a tea break in between the epic battles that DXSG maps provide. Also the map boasts elements similar to DXSG such as the teamwork needed to win the game through the airstrike mod, here your teammates can tell eachother the codes, secure the bunker and generally work together as they would in DXSG maps for a true DXSG experience.

Regarding the number of augs as a default setting, I feel three augs is a perfect number, it's a good compromise between BTDM and ATDM and therefore those two sets of players should feel comfortable with the setting in my opinion.

Although I do use mapvote regularly, I don't think it will be such a good idea on this server. As stated the maps players feel comfortable with will be voted the most, I personally love to see new works in Deus Ex and will always jump at the chance to see a new map, and I hope that after years of playing the same maps that Deus Ex players feel the same way.

I used to be a hardcore zero augger, but smuggler doesn't cut the mustard anymore, I'm completely bored of 0 augs maps, DXSG offers me an experience which is fun, fresh and very different to the usual, which is great for me. I don't want to see the same maps in heavy rotation, or any rotation for that matter.

A different map per game is what playing Deus Ex Online should be, this is especially apparant on a server which has lengthly time limited games. As great as the maps are I don't want to be playing an hour, or more, of the same map, and so in my opinion the lack of a mapvote option is critical to the server in ensuring it's momentum.

Regarding map size and secret areas and locations, DXSG is supposed to be big and bad, It will have areas and items that are seemingly unattainable at first, however when you take the time to learn the maps you will enjoy it more and more as you use your enemies tricks to your advantage.

Learning the map doesn't have to be a tedius task either, simply playing on the server with any hint of regularity will allow you to pick up little things here and there, things that you know you'd do differently in the future and events that you know you could've avioded or used to your advantage, no two games of DXSG are the same and for me personally is very satisfying and refreshing.

So my personal conclusion is to leave the server as it is, to the people that are complaining I feel they are missing the point of the gametype and therefore shouldn't really be playing it if it's not their cup of tea, I know I stayed glued to zero augged servers when I used to despise augs for example.

I would even add DXMP_Skyline to the server until an SG version came...

I can understand, some maps are large and sometimes there is not a full server, so I can see both sides of the mapvote argument. I would be willing to give it a try, but still we are finishing maps, so perhaps not until we have a set of new maps? When Cathedral arrives that will make people visit I am sure.

Maybe a poll should say like Classic SG or current settings... I think current setting would win, but you never know.

The FGS leaders and admins have decided on their settings and how the server should be run and several server regulars and even infrequent visitors agree it should not be changed.

To those whiney few who can't handle it, consider them overruled.

1. No-one was whining. And I encourage questions. It's healthy.

2.
The FGS leaders and admins have decided on their settings
Actually no, I consulted Alex and Kaiden, made a poll, consulted FGS and then rented the server and configured it. Nobody was away.

Hence 30 minute gametime. If any have noticed, that is a change from classic SG too. It was 38 to reflect SG-1 TV episodes. I might even do less than 30.

When Nobody handed me the editing and temporary "management" of SG, a lot of things were explained to me over the next year by him, Atlantis, Kaiden and Alex, feedback from players etc. And what you see now in terms of secret bases, maps, is the result of "fixing" issues. My biggest mistake was that the first two maps I made are very big and didn't anticipate how few players would be around in 2008.

DXSG on Wunderland also received criticism. Therefore I have taken Orbital off SG and left it on Wunderland with Gravity Rifle. Have fun.

It seems more want to play on EDH than atdm or SG server at the moment, but it is mostly a different kind of player and it's quite laggy, I think SG server can get more slots and provide something more stable, more interesting and more exciting... we will get there...

You should host an atdm server for my pleasure.

There are already 2 atdm servers hosted. They could take an amount of 24 players all together.
You can force players to leave a server, but you cannot force them to join. ;-)

No, but you can lure them in...
