Map help/update

Upon responding to a pm from skilgannon as to when he'd see me around the ER forums, my response was this and it sums up my map project well:

"When I get around to it. Hardly anyone gets one at the times I usually do, so recently I've just been editing. I scrapped my compound idea to start with a s lightly simpler level based on a pyramid like the one I used to play. 4096 units tall :)

I should have the bare beta version, just the first few rooms and the top with a plain desert surrounding that I may be able to send you within a week. Maybe even a few days depending on how steady my weed supply is."

Any ideas for this type of map? My pyramid isn't nearly as large as that one map (forget name) with the indiana jones music, but I think it will still be pretty sweet.

Oh, and help with elevators please. Tack's Deus Ex Lab has a three part elevator tutorial that cover elevators but it says to use the Carone Elevator set. I will go ahead and try that to get my map rolling, but one some computers (and possibly this one, I've yet to check) I've gotten a mismatch error on some maps that use it. It would be nice if no one had to encounter that as I want everyone possible to be able to try and critique my first multi map.

So anyone able to give a nice detailed description on how to do regular DX elevators? Maybe we should get a sticky going on map making, get a basic tutorial of sorts and anyone who has mapped offer tips and newbies such as myself can post q's.

If you find my introduction topic here (buried in here somewhere), I think there's something from chinny in there that will help with your elevator problem........

I suggest using this tutorial. It provides illustrations and detailed instructions.

Wow thank you Skilgannon and Sasquatch! Awesome help for real. Skil especially, your original post tree'd me to all the information I'll ever need. And thank you ShadowRunner and Nobody for your threads way back when on skil post, you definitely know your stuff.

EDIT: Wow sorry my post is so long I know some people may have short attention spans here (Spaz) :P

Working on Magus's non-Carone elevator tutorial, a godsend (if there be such a being.)

I have hammered out most of my ideas too. I took GODZ advice to heart about balanced maps, so what I've decide to make the pyramid more interesting to play on, my main idea goes like this:

At the top of the pyramid, I cut out a 256x512x512 chunk, leaving about 200 units high smaller pyramid above the cutout. This is the lookout point, and will be the hardest area to get to.

All spawnpoints will be outside the pyramid, with two main entrances and maybe two more not so main :) Inside, there will be three main levels, with smaller ones like airshafts and hidden rooms and passageways in between. But the main goal is to get UNDER the pyramid to a basement, which contains an armory with several grenades and law.

While I'm thinking about weapons too, I don't want every weapon available at the spawnpoint. A few lesser weapons, pistol, stealth, sawed-off. However the more you explore the inside and get to the goal areas, the better weapons you will come across. I won't make it too difficult to get a hold of an assault gun though, I promise :D

Anyways, finally dead center or the basement is a small elevator that goes straight through the center of the pyramid to the top, the main control center. This will contain better weapons, plenty of tools and meds, and security consoles to protect what you fought so hard to acquire, virtual control of the pyramid.

Also, each main level, including the basement, will have a mini control room with a security console that controls THREE turrets on each correponding floor, with the main control at the top controlling turrets for each entrance to the pyramid and the bottom elevator floor.

And of course, there will be one or two alternative routes to the top, but it will be costly. This map is really going to test your tactics and cleverness and you will definitely have to keep a supply of picks and tools if you want to get a hold of anything good.

So basically, you start with crap weapons, then first must get your way into the pyramid, avoiding snipers from above. Find a better gun or two, then either fight your way up to find the secret ways to the top, your make your way down the passages to the basement to attain the highest point for you and your team.

Damn I'm springing a rubbery one just thinking of playing this metabolic end product.

Oh yeah and I would like most of the doors to be keypadded and the code change like in Command_Post, but just a differnet one at the start of the game. Anything worth getting to will have a code if not other obstacle, and scattered throughout the interior will be datacubes and such with messages giving away a few of them. You will still be able to multitool MOST of them, but even then I want it to cost two or three of them depending on what you're going for. I would think it is simple enough, can anyone spell it out for me real quick?

That's all I have for now. Coming along well, I will be testing the barest form of my map soon, with just the main control and basement room done to test out my mover skills. The rest is downhill from there :D

Any critique is MORE than welcome.

Even if you learned to spell properly, he most likely wouldn't.

A word of advice Nino, be very careful who you give your map to, k? I think maybe two people have an actual copy of Main_Battle since I released it. And that's because they're the server hosters. ;) If you want it hosted on an FGS server, give it to Nobody or ShadowRunner. If you want it hosted on RTKM, give it to KillingMachine or Jima. You'd have to dig around for other server admins. I'd stay away from [MIRK] tho, their admins are completely useless and noob. Wouldn't trust 'em as far as I could throw them....

Are you saying my map is RPG? I wouldn't say so. I am just trying to make the multiplayer a little more tactical is all.

And no kidding skil on the maps and such, people would steal my sweet ideas in a heartbeat. You're gonna be my first tester though, right?

And this map is DX weapons, so I am not sure if it would get hosted on FGS :( But we'll see.

Although Carone's Elevator set makes it easier, they released several versions with the same name, which results in quite a few mismatch errors, I'd have to frequently take it out of /system when trying to join servers.

Anyway it's possible to make them without it, don't really remember the details but should be a guide somewhere =/

You can use it, but some people would have to remove the .u from their file before being able to join, not too many people have it anyway.

I'll test it if you want. :D I've no idea if I'm any good at finding bugs tho. Someone to look out for for that, is [AK]Sanguine, he helped me find one or two bugs on Main_Battle awhile back. And don't worry about your map being only DX weapons, there's an auto-weapon changer on the FGS servers that changes the weapons from DX to TNAG, but you do need to know what changes to what. The only ones I know are sniper = shock rifle, assault = vac rifle and GEP = ripper. Oh, and gas grenades become vac grenades too. ;)
