Brilliant question, the sort which my Chinese students used to ask me and I used to shrivel up and hide behind my desk.

I assume your using the word terrific as like "terrifying", when in actual fact terrific can be used as a positive like "that was a terrific effort". Terrific being good and horrific being the opposite I guess.

That's his point I think, we don't ever use terrific as a negative. We only say terrible.
