There's a certain implication that the person saying it is being sarcastic or ironic.
i.e. It's cloudy, not raining, but not sunny... the person says "nice day". Is it?
People also use "gf" in an ironic sense too, when having been sniped at the spawn, or typekilled, or set off a trap.
I think sometimes you mean it, sometimes you're being ironic, like almost patronizing lol.
