What you do is:
1. take the models you want to convert, make a copy of the *_d.3d files, keep them somewhere else, or just rename them.
2. use unr2de on the original models.
3. replace the converted _d.3d file with the backed-up original one.
That's pretty much it, all you change is the animation 3d file (_a.3d). Granted, you will probably still have to
modify the playerviewoffset, for weapons, and the scale, origin, etc. But the animations are clear and crisp!
