i use msn 7.5, live took too much space and was a hassle, and i had very similar problem with windows messenger.

I found the later MSN's and Live all took far too long to load up, even on a fairly powerful machine.

I got aMSN the other day after it was recommended to me. It's very much like MSN but not as metabolic end product.
I quite enjoy it so far. I've not really used it enough for me to tell you how well all of its features work though.

i always have the newest version, when im installing a new Windows xD..
Well now i have the Version... err 2009 Build 14.
I runs pretty good, never crash (so far,like 4 month) and looks good. nice Windows Vista/7 look heh, i like that one.
Its not big at all, maybe 45MB.

Maybe you got a very old version ore the installation was unsucces ore somethink? some files are broken, whatever. Try reinstall ore get newest version :)

I'm using Windows Live Messenger 8.5 BETA (8.5.1235.0517)
Almost never crashes! :)
