rant_How Deus Ex fits into your preferred world of art

Post by synthetic »

Deus Ex was probably the first game that truly blew me away, captivating in its every aspect. After a decade it has become somewhat harder to see what was so luring in a game with primitive geometry, pathing, textures, but one thing that stays clear in mind is how it felt the first time.
I found myself wondering if and what effect the game mightve had on my music/movie/art taste. I recall having no computer with dx for a period of roughly a year. First thing Id do once I had it fixed was launching dx and just listening the title music. Since I began to prefer industrial music over other genres roughly at the same time it all somehow fell together. Years Id listen no rock, pop, metal. Years later Id find myself spending countless hours watching more or less pure cyberpunk movies, with a Giger wallpaper on the background. Tetsuo would be the one movie to test me, a lot of friends would watch it because its different, I watched it because I believed to understand the meaning of uniting flesh with the metal. Hell, at some point I even seriously considered going with the dressing/hairstyle of the electro-goths/industrial underground. Because it was cool? It probably played a role, but a much bigger importance was on the fact that it lived in me. And now you have to wonder if a sci-fi maniac found a game, or maybe, just maybe a sci-fi/cy-p game helped a nub find his destined path. :-D

Obviously there is a lot of cheese, parody and cliche in Deus Ex, but having said that, the art direction of Deus Ex was amazing. Needless to say the concepts and plots were literally years ahead of its time, WTC, FEMA, False Flag Terror operations, all these concepts are now hitting mainstream media.
Specifically regarding the art direction, I've never thought of it that way before, but yes the atmosphere and realism of the worlds in DX have stayed with me since 2001? when I played Single Player and have drawn me further into the sci-fi world of dystopia. I was always a huge fan of Asimov, Dune and Star Wars, more realistic sci-fi and was never a Star Trek fan. Deus Ex hit a benchmark in realism and atmosphere and definitely showed a way of thinking in the non-lethal choices. Obviously having spent so many hours mapping, it must have seriously influenced me. I love the NY art direction and the abandoned base themes in DX. If I was better at photoshop, I would probably try to incorporate more into my photography work.

Shadowrunner is the first person I ever talked to on DXMP.. he said he only played DX and that was years ago. I have a feeling that this habit hasn't changed ever since!

Regularly yes, although COD MW2, Half Life, CS, CZ, age of empires and civ 2 and any flight sim that I can get my hands on get played too. Mapping takes up all free time.

First person to speak to me without swearing, was 502 RAT. Makiavelli or Reclaimer prolly was the first to speak to me. Dastardly prolly was first person to speak outside a server.
