Yeah I heard Holland refers to a certain part of the Netherlands, perhaps the natives only refer to this? The rest of us ignorants refer to Holland as being the same as the Netherlands.

Really? I always thought deutch was deutsch, misspelled.~[FGS]SaSQuATcH~ wrote:for a while i thought dutch was deutch, misspellt.

Re: Happy new year!
That is correct. We ourselves call our country 'Nederland', literally 'low land'. The English name for our country is actually (incorrectly, I might add) plural. I'm guessing that is a remainder of our historic republic, the Republic of Seven United Netherlands, which was a union of seven provinces. I guess the name just stuck. Holland was one of those provinces. Nowadays there are two of them, to spread out economic importance more over all the provinces. A united Holland would be too powerful, economically, in comparison to the rest of the country. So, in short, Holland is a part of the Netherlands.chin.democ. wrote:Yeah I heard Holland refers to a certain part of the Netherlands, perhaps the natives only refer to this?
