I was waiting for these questions :D
Since 19th century, there aren't any keepers, most lighthouses are automated (they need only some maintenance)
Spoiler: Quote from Wikipedia
Dalén's inventions, electrification, and automatic lamp changers began to make lighthouse keepers obsolete. For many years, lighthouses still had keepers, partly because lighthouse keepers could serve as a rescue service if necessary. Improvements in maritime navigation and safety such as the Global Positioning System (GPS) have led to the phasing out of non-automated lighthouses in the United States, with the last keepers removed in the 1990s.
And as Deus Ex takes place in 2050s, I didn't place any house for the keeper :)
(I was waiting for this question since I posted the layout :D)

yes i did read the feedback, and i knew smuggler was 2mb already before i started the map.

I'm not complaining about not winning tho, my issue is with the way it was judged, seemed like it was judged more on looks and feel rather than actual dxmp gameplay.

:bwahaha: Only the Chees could get himself disqualified! At first I was shocked, then felt like blowing up several things. It's a massive oversight to miss as the Tnag .u package is 10.5mb's alone! (dam that DTS and copy past weapons from CMD)and thought the music file was a core/standard music file. Like you said rules are rules so no point bitching about it :-D
I've learned a lot from doing this challenge and had fun doing it which is the main thing. Thanks to the judges who took the effort and time to do this challenge and give result feed back to every map entered. Congrats to the winner and everyone who didn't get disqualified :bwahaha: There all good maps and look forward to playing on all of them in the future. Also any other upcoming map challenge count me in....a fresh install no mods, extra textures or music I might have a chance to be last place :-D See you all in game :matrix: :mofu:

Well done to Cozmo and Kalman for their winning entries, also congrats to those 8 that handed in their maps before the deadline. I'd like to thank the judges for their comprehensive feedback of every map and their time spent looking at the maps.

I hope everyone learned and had fun from this challenge, and I hope the judges had fun too. It was a tough challenge managing your two megabytes and I believe the community has come up trumps with many entries of decent quality maps that are all different from one another.

I believe the challenge was a success and I think we should come up with another challenge in the future, perhaps at the end of the year or so.

Chees, I'm glad you take it in good humour and you saw the point being made. Your map is excellent! Probably we have been very hard on you because of the rules. Otherwise you may well have a winning map there!

Masta - I completely agree. If I am forced to pick one, Kalman stands out, but the map is not the best map in current form. Anax's, Cozmo's and Chinny's are much stronger MP maps. I'm not against a third judge, but I suspect they will arrive at the same order, it's really a decision between Cozmo's and Kalman's. It could be put to a public vote.

When I judged the maps in SDK and screenshots, you came joint 1st. When I played the maps you lost a serious amount of points when I realized there were no doors, movers, ladders, hardly any sounds, no signage, friggin nothing for the player except floor and crates. Some mappers created more varied gameplay designs, with far far more interaction and environment than your map Anax, however hard I try, I can't score you highly for that, they did more. It's your choice to trust our judgement or not. I'm not saying a map has to has all of this, but just for a second put yourself in my shoes, other maps had more sounds, there were more original entries and I wasn't the first person to realize you spent an immense amount of details in the striplights, but provided no other entertainment at all. You could argue it was a minimal style and I would agree, but there is still the issue of bsp death in your map, technically is not as good it looks. That's the problem, your map looks deceptively good, but under analysis, it is missing a lot that other maps have. The reason Kalman doesn't win outright, is gameplay, so I think we have judged fairly. Without the BSP death and a few more sounds or environmental factors, you could have easily scored much higher.

It's your second map and you came 3rd, hardly a bad result.

I can see lots of different ideas.

The judges editing Anax, Cozmo's, Kalman's and Chinny's maps to demonstrate what we mean.
The judges making a 2mb map and all the challengers voting.
The Challenge winner's set the next challenge.
Chees sets a challenge.
The judges set a challenge to all and new judges take their place.
Face had the idea of swapping mappers between mappers for editing, to show them their strengths, I like this too.

Do you have some idea for the next criteria and what the challenge should be?

2nd map you could not have done much better, you do have something very playable and enjoyable, it just needs a few k of detail on some of the larger wall surfaces to break the monotony and perhaps something in the really empty parts. Lighting and texturing is pretty excellent, it's outstanding.

It's been interesting seeing how everyone was doing. I'm just sorry I couldn't post my own entry...

It was a hard decision to make and believe me we tried so hard to find extra positives in each of the top three maps to make one of them a winner. Everytime we found a winning element in one, we'd replay the others and find something to match it.

Just wanted to say big thanks to Chin - if it hadn't been for him we wouldn't have 8 brand new maps to play right now! If anyone wants their entry added to the rotation on the Deus Ex: Evolved server just let me know.

I definitely look forward to the next contest :-D.
