2MB Mapping Challenge - Cozmo
Been stuck inside with a cold, so why not. Small Smuggler-like map based on a St Albans backstreet I have to go through on my way to training sometimes. Designed for 0A, but should be good for augged gametypes too. 900KB used so far. Quick screenie, but will post more later.

Re: 2MB Mapping Challenge - Cozmo
Worked in St Albans for a month last September, nice place.
Looking very DX. I think playability on Damnation Alley is pretty good for mixed-experience battles, so I'm keen to see how this pans out.
Welcome to the challenge!

Looking good Cozmo!
Re: 2MB Mapping Challenge - Cozmo
I take it back; I'm too lazy for screenshots.
Completed the first version, currently at 1.06 MB. Turned out better than I was expecting, in terms of detail etc. One side might appear unbalanced, but the other team has an easier job of flanking them, and items have been hidden everywhere. It hasn't got a name yet and I forgot to remove the JCDouble I used for proportioning.
Anyway, here's my entry (so far?).

Re: 2MB Mapping Challenge - Cozmo
Wow Cozmo so much stuff for only just over one meg a real eye opener, I did notice some floating brushes in the upper section hehe. It's great to see you working with Deus Ex again, looking forward to working with you soon.
Re: 2MB Mapping Challenge - Cozmo
Nice man, looks good (even though we're playing it atm XD) But yeah, I can see it's heavily inspired, by PK and the roof gardens spot, either way really nice.
Re: 2MB Mapping Challenge - Cozmo
Ah, yeah on one of the rebuilds a few random items / brushes / movers across the map jumped up by a few units. Thought I got them all. Damn it! XD I should add an actual skybox and make the upper area less ugly.
Good to see you finally registered Sonny!

Re: 2MB Mapping Challenge - Cozmo
I'm liking the ledges, pillars and it looks aug-playable so far.
Re: 2MB Mapping Challenge - Cozmo
Experimenting today with the technique I posted when Atrey said their map was initially going to be a jungle. Turns out trees made from mutilated houseplants and logs look better than I thought they would...
(Tent and rocky background both placeholder)

I'm thinking either make this into a second submission, or do a collaboration map? (Yes?!)
So far I haven't had much FPS drop. With some clever zoning, we should be able to make a really dense jungle that would run at a normal FPS.

Re: 2MB Mapping Challenge - Cozmo
I'm wanting to make brushwork work trees for one of my maps, that looks surprisingly good hehee. 2nd submission or co-authored map sounds cool.
Re: 2MB Mapping Challenge - Cozmo
Not really sure where I'm going with the jungle thing. Will just upload a quick little demo of what I've done with it so far. I think any potential in it would be as foliage in a WW2 mod map. Until then, just gonna dump it for anyone who wants to use any of it.
With some work, it can look pretty decent. Shot from a map I ended up deleting:
Demo has a horizontally-mirrored skybox with trees through it, which works pretty well - if the player gets a look outside of the map, they'll just see more jungle in the distance. Black doesn't look good in the background but it's just an example. There's also option of having a canopy in the skybox etc.

Re: 2MB Mapping Challenge - Cozmo
Can we enter more than 1 map?
Thats looking pretty good both map's. I've been looking for trees and jungle like stuff for dx a while and never found any, guess I will make them at some point. I know ued3 has some great stuff like this to work with jungle atmosphere as well

Re: 2MB Mapping Challenge - Cozmo
I found a bug
You forgot to texture the top of that subtract brush
A bit laggy, I got only 27-30 FPS (and 50-70 on a default map like smuggler)

Re: 2MB Mapping Challenge - Cozmo
It's Chinny you are challenging, we're just judges, so it's his decision about multiple entries I would say. I don't see anything wrong with it personally, especially if the maps were complimentary in some way, gameplay or otherwise. Would we judge you on all entries or consider each map a separate entry? So far we're judging quality not quantity I guess.
Cozmo, jungle is exciting. It was something I was hoping for the WW2 server. There is Samurai Sword and Sword at a pinch could be Kukri. I had two ideas but didn't get around to them, one was a dense jungle with no landmarks, so players would be lost and firing into foliage. The other was a more navigable map, like a lagoon with water and intermittent jungle areas. It's original, so if you manage a cool jungle map, it's going to score very highly in some areas.

It's all about being creative with your two megs allowance, if that means you want to do two maps or more then that's great.
