While mapping and editing of the zones and viewpoints in the centre of the map continues, I discovered that you can massively increase the performance using OpenGL. I know some players have been finding it almost unplayable so here is how to switch to OpenGL.
Press Esc > Settings > Display > Change Renderer.
)OpenGL may not be immediately visible, click on a button similar to "view all renderers"). Choose OpenGL.
If you find it considerably darker: Press Esc > Settings > Display > Brightness and change from .6 default setting to 1.0.
I was down to 10 or less when the hordes charged in the centre of the map, but now I only notice an fps drop, it's playable with OpenGL. I feel it looks more cartoony and there is less subtle blending, but the performance outweighs the aesthetics for me.
Announcement: Use OGL on WW2/bot server.
